Village History
A Short History of Unter-Albota, District of Cahul in Moldova Today Called Kamenka

The village of Unter-Albota is situated about 1 km from Albota in southwest Moldova and about 28 km north of Cahul. It still exists today under the name of Kamenka and even has its own Russian-Orthodox congregation and priest.

In this area in 1865 German settlers drew up a contract for 25 years with the estate owner Kilius to work his land as renters. When their time ran out, many of the Germans bought their own land in the neighboring villages of Albota and Sofiewka. Then in 1919 the village of Unter-Albota was established and the land bought up by interesting farmers. However many non-Germans also took advantage of this possibility so that Russians, Romanians and Bulgarians outnumbered the German population of Unter-Albota. In 1940 the village was the home of 181 Germans and 420 of other nationalities.
