EMIL'S ESCAPE - by Mary A. (Steinle) Bartholomew, 1998. "Emil's Escape" begins with a present-day grandfather relating the family tale about an ancestor 'Emil' to his grandsons, as it had been passed down to him. In 1807, young Emil and hi s parents go to Darmstadt to the 'Welcome Home' parade for his two older brothers and the rest of the Grand Duke's soldiers from one of Napoleon's campaigns. Emi l is completely captivated by the drummers leading the Unit. From then on, Emil's goal in life is to become a drummer ­ and he does attain his goal. However, it' s definitely NOT what he had anticipated. After capture and enslavement by the Cossacks during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, Emil manages to escape and make his way to a German village in Russia, beginning a new life there ­ (and eventually, becoming one of the author's ancestors).
