Records Retrieval
Until recently, no serious attempt have been made to retrieve Crimean records from the archives in Russia although many of the other geographic groups such as the Beresan and Bessarabian groups have been collecting funds and retrieving records for their regions for some time now.
Now that the Crimea has been organized into a RIG (Regional Interest Group) under the auspices of GRHS, this would be a perfect time to begin to think very seriously about what we, as a group, can achieve in this area.
With the GRHS, Beresan, Bessarabia, and Grossliebental groups leading the way in obtaining access to some of the archives in Russia, we have had a path blazed for us to follow in their footsteps.
In many ways, Crimean researchers have been blessed by having the St. Petersburg records available to us through the LDS. However, as these records only cover the period of time from 1833-1885 (minus the 1849), there are many years worth of records that would be of immense help to the Crimean researcher from the period before and after the St. Pete’s records begin and end.
The earliest Crimean villages were formed around 1805, so there are about 30 years worth of records missing from those early days of Crimean GR history. Some earlier records have surfaced for selected area, such as the LDS file #2041510 birth records which cover 1812-1816, and 1822-1838 however, there are still many gaps for most villages that need to be filled from the early time period.
The Crimean GR’s were deported to Siberia in 1941, and likewise, there are records missing from the end of the St. Pete’s in 1885 through this period of time. Once again, there are a few selected records from this time period, but also many more gaps.
With this in mind, we need to make a serious effort to raise funds to be prepared for when records become available. Donations can be mailed to GRHS, 1125 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, ND 58501. Please be sure to designate donations to be marked “For CRIMEA Records Retrieval Only” Donations to this fund may be tax deductible so be sure to check with your tax accountant!
