Church History of Neusatz
As noted in the village history of Neusatz, this Lutheran parish colony was with without a pastor from the time the village was formed in 1804 until 1812, when Pastor Hornburg settled in Neusatz. Prior to that time, visiting pastors stopped in the village from time to time. After Pastor Hornburg left in 1814, Neusatz was again without a pastor until Pastor Boerlin moved there in 1822.
On 15 November, 1825, the first church in Neusatz was dedicated under Pastor Boerlin. Unfortunately, the pastor died in 1826, once again leaving Neusatz without a pastor. In 1828, Pastor Flenitzer came to the parish, but he too only stayed for a few years.
In 1831, Pastor Kylius came to Neusatz and served as Pastor until 1859. After that time, a few more pastors came and went, and the next longest serving pastor was Pastor Thindemann who served from 1865 to 1893.
Church records for the parish of Neusatz were kept either by the schoolmaster or an elder of the church during the periods of time in which there was no pastor in residence. During the periods Neusatz did have a pastor, he would take charge of the keeping of the church records.
To date, very few copies of church records for the Crimea have come to light. There are a few scattered records that have been filmed by the LDS in addition to the Lutheran St. Petersburg records that cover the years from 1833-1885.
Please see below for a listing of the church records that we know of to date. Some of these records have been indexed and the indexes are available online.
