Mother Colonies of the Crimean Villages
Many of the villages in the Crimea were formed by settlers from other regions in Russia. When land became scarce in other regions, the vast, empty steppe land in the Crimea was a prime target. Many of the Molotschna, Belowesch, and Berdjansk, Taurien settlers had seen this open land while transporting goods to and wounded from the Crimea during the Cirmean War. When the question of where to expand became an issue, the Crimea was one of the first areas they considered.
Many other areas were also suffering from a shortage of land. Although the regions like Bessarbia and Cherson mainly formed daughter colonies near their mother colonies, in later years, this was not always possible. Therefore, some colonies were also formed in regions farther away like the Crimea. Listed below are many of the mother/daughter colonies that were formed in the Crimea. I have also tried to indicate where in Germany the original settlers of the mother colonies migrated from if the information was available.
