Background

GRHS has been aware for several years that the archives in Kischinev (now Chisinau, Moldova) holds many of the Bessarabian village Revision Lists for the years of 1835, 1850, and 1859, along with a few other “census” items of possible interest.

GRHS has remained in contact with the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) in Salt Lake City, Utah, as they pursue and execute a contract to film these census at Kischinev. In the meantime, a Bessarabian Team comprised of GRHS members was formed, who proceeded to establish a working relationship with the Bessarabian Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

In 1998, while working with the Museum, the team found that the Museum was pursuing an agreement to obtain copies of these same documents, without the knowledge of what the LDS Church was doing to also obtain copies.  But by this time the agrement to gain copies by the Museum was too far advanced to halt their relationship with the Archives.

Once the records were received at the Bessarabian Museum in Stuttgart, GRHS entered into a formal agreement with the Museum and started a Clearing House Project to translate these records from Russian into a form that both the North American and European Bessarabian researcher could use.

We must take this opportunity to give our sincere thanks to the Bessarabian Museum, who provided the raw materials for most of the data that constitutes our current holdings of Bessarabian census.  Without their support and sharing of this information, we would not have the majority of this data available to us today.

During the years of 2002 - 2005, small Clearing House teams at GRHS continued to process these many census from the Cyrillic into an agreed to form, and placed in our GRHS Bookstore for sale.

While pursuing these efforts with the raw records provided to GRHS by the Bessarabian Museum in Stuttgart, we found other Bessarabian Census materials along the way.  We incorporated those materials in our overall Bessarabian Census project efforts.

Before we brought the final census to paper form in 2005, we launched yet another phase to the Bessarabian Census projet by starting to accumulate all of the Bessarabian Census we could find into one publication.  Earlier the GRHS Clearing House had done a similar publication referred to as "Stumpp Supplement - Volume I" [SS I].

In SSI, the majority of the census were for the Odessa area with only a few for the Bessrabian villages.  We had designed a form that would allow us to put the data into a more compact state where we would not use near the paper the original format used.  With the Bessarabian Census, now being referred to as SS II, formerly referred to as "Black Sea German-Russian Census Volume Two",  we kept that basic format which had been designed and used earlier.

Prior to the convention in 2006, we had the paper version of SS II ready for the membership so we could start selling it at the convention to the members and the public.  Not only that, but by the time the 2006 happened, we had also started a series of RIG CD which were to only be sold to the membership.  So with the Bessarabian RIG effort we had a CD - AND, we also placed a digital copy of SS I and SS II on  standalone CDs [two CDs] for sale to the membership - starting with the 2006 convention also.

[a copy of the index of SS II is available]

A note should be made at this time.  All of the Bessarabian Census that was included on SS I was also brought over and included on SS II, so the researcher only researching Bessarabia only needs to gain their copy of SS II to have all of the Bessarabian Census.

The LDS continued to Film and Catalog the many Census for Bessarabian in the Kischinev Archives.  In December of 2005, the catolging was completed of approximately 850 Bessarabian census.  Our German village census comprise something less than about 10% of these census.  The Catologing is in the Cyrillic and not done to the degree that we can handly pick the data up like a "Sears" catalog and "see" what we want to focus on.

In the Spring and Summer of 2006, we have studied this LDS cataloging and prepared planning for a special project we are going to pursue with the LDS via the GRHS Clearing House.  As this project takes shape, we will attempt to keep these webpages current as to how the efforts work out.

As a part of the project with the LDS, we will be developing Indexes for the basic census we have copies of from Kischnev.  See the following lising.
