Regional Interest Group
From Beresan District Odessa to Sandusky, Ohio

GRHS Members Only

The first immigrants to go from the Beresan District to the United States was in the autumn of 1849. Most of what is known about this group was recorded by George Rath, Die Russlanddeutschen in denvereinigten Statten vol Nort Amerika, in Heimatbuch der Deutschen aus Russland (Stuttgart: Die Landsmannshaft der Deutschen aus Russland, 1963).

In 1849 Johann Ludwig Bette and a small following of friends from the Black Sea German Colony of Johannestal, boarded the sailing vessel Constantia on July 1*, 1849 at Odessa and arrived in New York on October 22, making it a trip of 101 days. The group of 21 families totaled 83 people, with the majority of the family heads being skilled laborers or had acquired a profession with only nine listed as "peasant" (farmer).

The eventual place of residence of only a few of the 21 families is known. Abraham Sprenger , Michael Burkhardt and Anton Lauer lived in Burlington, Iowa. After a short stay in Cleveland, Ohio, Ludwig Bette and his next of kin went to Kelleys Island in Lake Erie near Sandusky, Ohio, where they became successful winegrowers.
